Not really!

Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi added a next generation flagship named Xioami Mi6 toits product portfolio on 19th April. As expected from a 2017 flagship, it comes with top of the line hardware embedded under a dazzling glass body. We have liked many aspects of the new smartphone such as dual-camera, Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, 6GB LPDDR4 RAM, under-glass fingerprint sensor, and stereo speakers. However, one thing that we didn’t like is the lack of the 3.5mm audio jack. While companies like Samsung and LG are shrinking the footprints of their flagships and increasing the screen size without giving up on any functionality, Xiaomi's decision to discard 3.5mm audio jack seems to be a mistake. Moreover, Mi6 is not water or dust resistant. Xiaomi didn't achieve anything out-of-the-box by ditching 3.5mm jack in favor of audio over USB Type-C port. Xiaomi is the same company that produced Xiaomi Mi Mix with an incredible 91.3 percent screen-to-body ratio. Despite engineering an offbeat product, Xiaomi found workarounds to retain all standard functionalities of a smartphone on Mi Mix. Therefore, it's hard to get the fact that the company couldn't find a way to incorporate a 3.5mm jack in Mi6. Let us put design and technical facets aside and think from a business perspective. Xiaomi operates mostly in developing countries where most people don't spend on expensive mobile accessories like Bluetooth headphones or headsets. Moreover, headphones with USB Type-C port from a renowned brand is rare to find in these markets. Also, Xiaomi could have learned from its counterpart LeEco's failed strategy of giving up 3.5mm audio jack on its smartphones. In a nutshell, this bold move from Xiaomi may prove detrimental to the company.
